The much-talked-about internet week kicked off in the capital and some other parts of the country from Saturday eying promotion of internet use as well as internet-based commodities and services.
Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), Information and Communication Technology Division and Grameenphone have jointly organising the event titled ‘Bangladesh Internet Week 2015’ across the country which will continue to September 11.
Apart from three major internet expositions taking place in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet, the unprecedented internet festival is also being held in 487 upazilas.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the event being taking place at Banani Society Ground in the capital through internet. The country’s renowned e-commerce companies, mobile apps developers, web portals, device manufacturers as well as all internet products and services companies are taking part at the event under which a number of events are being held. The Internet Week-2015 is being observed in the country with the slogan "password of development is in your hand." The primary objective of the week is to reach internet to 10 million people through internet fairs and giving idea to people about internet to create 15 million new users in next one year.
One of the main objectives of the week is to bring the people under internet network and provide half of them with broadband connections to fulfill the target of earning one billion dollar from ICT sector by 2018, five billion by 2021 and 50 billion by 2041. The Banani Society ground was found to be a virtual marketplace where everything - from clothing to different services - is sold on internet.
The festival will remain open for all from 2pm to 11pm in the capital and from 10am to 8pm elsewhere in the country until. Finance Minister AMA Muhith, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Pakak, ICT Secretary Shyamsundar Sikder, President of BASIS Shameem Ahsan and CEO of Grameen Phone Rajib Shetty, among others, were present at the inaugural function. After inaugurating the week, the prime minister talked to the finance minister and the ICT secretary. Sheikh Hasina also talked to the local leaders of Tungipara of Gopalganj, Peerganj of Rangpur, Companyganj of Slyhet, Singra of Natore and Barisal Sadar Upazila through videoconference using BanglaGovNet and InfoSarker-2 network.
