BASIS, GrameenPhone and ICT Division jointly organize “Bangladesh Internet Week 2015”

With the goal of creating 1 Crore new internet users in the country every year, Bangladesh Internet Week 2015 is being held this year. Along with three major expos taking place in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet, this unprecedented internet festival will also be held in 487 upazilas throughout Bangladesh. The country’s foremost e commerce companies, mobile apps development companies, web portals, device manufacturers as well as all internet products and services companies will be taking part. There will be numerous events throughout Bangladesh Internet Week.
Bangladesh Internet Week will be held from the 5th to the 11th of September and it is being jointly organized by Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), GrameenPhone and the ICT Division of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology.
A ‘Meet the Press’ event was held at the ballroom of the Westin on Monday. In this connection, BASIS President Shameem Ahsan presided over the event where Zunaid Ahmed Palak, State Minister for ICT, was present as the chief guest. Yasir Azman, Chief Marketing Officer of GrameenPhone were also present. The welcoming address was given by BASIS Senior Vice President and Convener of Bangladesh Internet Week, Russell T. Ahmed. BASIS Vice President M. Rashidul Hasan, Secretary General Uttam Kumar Paul, Joint Secretary General Mustafizur Rahman Sohel, Treasurer Shah Imraul Kaeesh, Directors Ashraf Abir, Samira Zuberi Himika, Ariful Hasan Apu, BASIS Executive Director Sami Ahmed, as well as representatives from GrameenPhone and the ICT division were also present.
At the programme, ICT state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak remarked, “To ensure that the country’s internet use and access increases, as well to make sure that the rural people from all over the country are able to enjoy the benefits of the internet, the government has created a vision of ensuring high speed broadband internet access to all of the unions in the country. Aside from this, Internet bandwidth is becoming more and more affordable for everyone. Bangladesh Internet Week is another step into making the goal of Digital Bangladesh a reality. This sort of event, spanning across 487 upazilas is unprecedented and has not been done anywhere else in the world. This public-private event will play a vital role in the continued development and improvement of our country’s ICT sector, I believe.
BASIS President Shameem Ahsan said, “We are determined to ensure internet access to every part of the country. That is why we are organizing Bangladesh Internet Week in such a festive manner. Through this event we can bring the products of BASIS member companies, as well as other providers, to the common people at the grassroots level. This way the people can become aware and excited about the prospects of the internet and the different software companies will have a platform to showcase their products and services.
GrameenPhone Chief Marketing Officer, Yasir Azman said “The internet is an integral part of the lives of Bangladeshi citizens now. One of the main goals of BASIS “One Bangladesh” vision, as well as GrameenPhone’s “Internet for all” is to create 5 Crore internet users throughout the country and Bangladesh Internet week will be the driving force to fulfill this goal. I believe that this jointly organized event will be massively successful and exuberant.
BASIS Senior Vice President, as well as Convener of Bangladesh Internet Week, Russell T. Ahmed highlighted that “This festival, held from the 5th to 11th of September will be taken part by e commerce companies, web portals, mobile application companies as well as other established mobile based companies throughout the country. These products and services will be showcased throughout the week. Visitors will be able to see these products and services being demonstrated.
It was also mentioned that, as a part of Bangladesh Internet Week, a number of workshops, tech sessions, seminars will be held throughout the country in various educational institutions as well as 7 policy dialogues will be held on mass media. And through this the number of internet users will be increased by 1 crore people every year and the common people will be made more aware of the benefits of the internet and internet enabled services.
It was announced that, from the 5th of September to the 7th of September, an exposition will be held at the Banani field in the capital. From the 9th of September, it will be held in Rajshahi Nankin Bazaar and on the 11th of September, an expo will be held in the Sylhet City Indoor Stadium for Bangladesh Internet Week. As well as this, from the 5th to the 11th September, festivities will continue in each of the 487 upazilas all cross the country.
